As an important part of social business activities, commercial banks play an important role in the society.

Commercial banks have several key functions. Intermediary of credit is the basic function of commercial banks. Commercial banks intake savings and then use the deposits to issue loans to individuals and corporate. Also, commercial banks play a role as an intermediary of payment through deposit transfer, cashing for depositors and making payment as an agent. Thirdly, credit creation, also known as money creation. Whenever a bank makes a loan, it simultaneously creates a matching deposit in the borrower's bank account, thereby creating new money. To meet the needs of customers, commercial banks have been continually expand their service sector, such as providing various financial products, online banking service and so on.

As critical components of the whole picture of economic development, commercial banks should undertake their due social responsibility from following two aspects.

Firstly, they should do their job prudentially to avoid engaging in socially harmful acts. Commercial banks play a very significant role in a process of economic social needs. They satisfy financial needs of sectors varies from large or small companies to us ordinary people. Therefore, once something wrong happened in banks, the economic sphere would be hardly shocked. For example, the current money shortage is caused by a fund mismatch between banks and real economy. If commercial banks take no measures to adjust and control the problem, it may endanger the safety of deposits and furthermore, lead to a widespread fear.

Secondly, they should perform activities that directly advance social goals. As we all know, commercial banks make great profits through their business. This means they must and can take efforts to participate in public benefit activities, such as donating to universities, providing money for commonweal project and organizing charity activities.

Commercial banks can help us make a better world while they do their job and return back to the society. They should be aware of that and take it seriously.
